| The concept of using hemp for building construction came from an architect named Rosetti, who presented it to La Chanvrière in 1987. La Chanvrière developed Canosmose and Canobiote in collaboration with Yves Kuhn, a dancer-turned-contractor who implemented the concept of building with hemp. Since then, Kuhn has used the material to build and restore buildings throughout France and Switzerland. Another famous hemp builder, France Perrier, got her start in the industry by working at La Chanvrière de l’Aube. She has since developed a similar product, Isochanvre, used by her Le Mans-based architectural firm, Chenevotte Habitat. And as recently as February 1997, a new co-op, La Chanvrière du Belon, began producing similar products in the north of France. isochanvre.sarl@wanadoo.fr Marie-Ange is not bothered by competing hemp suppliers, confident that there are plenty of markets in which to expand. When asked about possible joint ventures in countries like Canada, Marie-Ange’s face lights up. “Oh yes, we would definitely like to find partners in other countries where hemp is being grown,” she said. “It is not very economical to ship Canosmose. But the important thing is to teach builders the methods for building with hemp.” |
